Jean Piaget was a Swiss Psychologist who is famous for his views on how a child's mind works and develops. Be believes that a child's brain has four stages of cognitive development called "schema". This consists of the sensori-motor stage, the pre-operational stage, the concrete operational stage and the formal operational stage.
Sensori-motor stage: 0-2 Years of Age
This stage is when the child begins to differentiate itself from objects and begins to realize that an object still exists even if it isn't visible. For example, after a marble is placed underneath a cup, the child has the potential to understand that the marble is still there. This process is known as conservation. This is also where the child begins to do things for certain reasons like pulling a string to set a mobile in motion.
Pre-operational Stage: 2-7 Years of Age
During the pre-operational stage signs of intelligence are shown through symbols, memory and imagination are developed and through the use of more mature language. The child still believes that everybody sees things the same way they do, this is partly known as egocentrism. The child is also beginning to classify objects by a single feature, for example, even though quarters, nickels and dimes are all different sizes, a child will them in one pile, and pennies in another because of the color difference.
Concrete Operational Stage: 7-11 Years of Age
