Lev Vygotsky (1986-1934) was a Soviet psychologist and founder of the Social Development Theory. The Social Development theory stressed that social interaction is vital for the development of cognition. The more knowledgeable other refers to a person who is smarter and has more skills than the learner. The MKO is typically a teacher or an adult but children could also be the MKO. The zone of proximal development (ZPD) refers to skills that are to difficult for a child to learn on his own, but can be taught with guidance by a more knowledgable other.
