Mary Ainsworth's work is an elaboration of John Bowlby's work on what he called the Attachment Theory. She has contributed to the Attachment theory by thinking of a procedure for observing the level of a child's attachment to their caregiver. This procedure is known as the Strange Situation. During this experiment a child is allowed to play in a room for 20 minutes while the child's mother and random people enter and leave the room. The purpose of this experiment is to observe the amount of time the child plays with his toys but also the child's reaction to the coming and going of the caregiver. The Strange Situation experiment is important because we now have evidence that everybody has different levels of attachment to their caregivers.
I think Mary Ainsworth would note that a child's level of attachment would be lower in modern society because it is more common for both parents to be working. This leaves the caregivers no choice but to put their child into situations with people who are strangers in the child's eyes.
